Polebrook Airfield Habitat Bank Now Live in Northamptonshire
We are pleased to announce the launch of our latest habitat bank at Polebrook Airfield, Northamptonshire — a site with a history as compelling as its ecological future.
Originally an RAF airfield during the Second World War, the land was left to regenerate naturally for decades following decommissioning, quietly rewilding itself into a site of genuine ecological significance. Adjacent to the Ashton Wold SSSI and designated as a Local Wildlife Site, Polebrook has been under the careful stewardship of the Broadbent family for over 50 years.
That history is now being channelled into something lasting.
Polebrook Airfield is now registered as a Biodiversity Net Gain Habitat Bank under North Northamptonshire Council, within Natural Character Areas 88 – Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Claylands and 89 – Northamptonshire Vales.
The site delivers over 150 biodiversity units across High and Medium Distinctiveness Habitats, including:
- Open Mosaic Habitat
- Lowland Mixed Deciduous Woodland
- Species-rich Hedgerows
- Priority Ponds
The launch of Polebrook Airfield adds to our growing portfolio of live habitat banks delivering measurable, lasting gains for nature across England.
